When Should You Start Weaning Your Baby? Signs Your Baby Is Ready + First Foods Guide
Share
Weaning is an exciting milestone — but when is the right time to start?
For most UK parents, the NHS recommends beginning around 6 months of age. But every baby is different, so how can you tell when your little one is ready?
Top Signs Your Baby Is Ready for Weaning:
-
Sits up with minimal support
Your baby should have good head control and sit upright (even if wobbly). -
Shows interest in food
Watching you eat, grabbing food, or mimicking chewing are great signs. -
Loss of tongue-thrust reflex
This is when babies stop automatically pushing food out with their tongue. -
Able to swallow food
Your baby should be able to move food to the back of their mouth and swallow without spitting it out immediately.
Great First Foods to Try:
Start with soft, easy-to-digest foods like:
- Mashed banana
- Cooked, mashed carrots or sweet potatoes
- Unsweetened baby rice
- Smooth purées of single vegetables
Serve these in our suction bowl or fill our reusable food pouches for easy on-the-go feeding!
Tip: Introduce one new food at a time and wait 2–3 days to watch for allergies.
